Legal updates: 1023EZ and Unpaid Interns

The IRS recently revised Form 1023-EZ, Streamlined Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and its instructions to help small charities apply for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. For details, please see the IRS’ Exempt Organizations Update.

The U.S. Department of Labor also recently issued new guidance on unpaid interns. For a summary prepared by Davis Wright Tremaine, please see this alert.

Wayfind is hiring a Program Coordinator

We are excited to announce that we are hiring a part-time Program Coordinator.  This is big step forward for Wayfind. Wayfind has run its operations with one part-time staff person since we opened our doors in 2004.  Its our tenth year and we are bursting at the seams to meet the growing demand for our services to the nonprofits and microenterprises throughout Washington. Wayfind brings Free Nonprofit Financial Oversight Training to Seattle

Wayfind is proud to be part of a National Network of pro bono providers that supports nonprofits.  The National Network, in partnership with DLA Piper LLP (US) and Pfizer, creates free video-conference nonprofit legal trainings and video-casts them across the nation to DLA Piper offices.  We are able to bring this incredible resource to  the DLA Piper Seattle office located in the Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle.  DLA Piper also provides delicious breakfasts and lunches for the attendees. All for FREE!

On May 16th, Wayfind and DLA Piper will be hosting The Role of The Board and Senior Management In Financial Insight.  This seminar will help educate Board members and nonprofit leaders about some of the key elements of financial management.  Please go to our Trainings page for details on this training.

GiveBIG to Wayfind on May 6, 2014!

It’s time to GiveBIG to Wayfind.  GiveBIG day is on May 6, 2014.  With every donation to Wayfind made on May 6, 2014 through Wayfind’s profile page on The Seattle Foundation website, The Seattle Foundation will stretch-match it with a GiveBIG pooled fund.

In the past all donations made on GiveBIG were stretched about 10%.  So your donation of $100 will get Wayfind $110.  So please give to Wayfind on GiveBIG day – May 6, 2014.  All you have to do is go to the Wayfind profile page on The Seattle Foundation website, and make your donation.

A Note on our name change: As you know Wayfind recently changed it’s name from WAACO or Washington Attorneys Assisting Community Organizations. Changing our name on websites and banking documents is a cumbersome process.  You may see WAACO or Wayfind on some of the GiveBIG pages or receipts.  We apologize for the confusion.  It’s safe to make a donation to Wayfind or WAACO through the Seattle Foundation website.  All donations made to either Wayfind or WAACO will come to us.

We are excited to announce that WAACO has changed our name to Wayfind, a newly invigorated brand that accurately reflects the work we are accomplishing today:  attorneys supporting community organizations to navigate the legal system, and assisting them in having a stronger impact in communities statewide.

Our mission and services remain the same. Wayfind volunteer attorneys continue to provide free legal services to nonprofits and microenterprises, and we provide high-quality, affordable legal trainings for nonprofits and attorneys.

Nonprofit Legal Trainings Coming to South King County
